Biography

Carl Rowe studied Fine Art (printmaking) at Manchester Polytechnic, graduating with an MA in 1985. Since 2001 he has worked at Norwich University of the Arts where he is currently Course Leader for BA Honours Fine Art and MA Fine Art unit leader. His practice is print-based and multimedia with recent projects including A Banquet for Ultra Bankruptcy an installation and performance at Arts Laboratory Berlin (2013) and Drool a screenprinted wall work at the Bluecoat Gallery, Liverpool (2010). His prints have been exhibited in Guanlan Print Biennial Shenzen China, Penang International Print Malaysia and the 15th Tallinn Print Triennial.

EASTprint
EASTinternational was an annual open exhibition delivered during the summer months in the vacated fine art studio spaces of Norwich University of the Arts. Its simple structure of two invited selectors, one artist and one curator, gallerist or critic, ensured a fresh and responsive representation of contemporary artists, many in the early stages of their careers. This paper is an attempt to map the seismic shifts that have occurred in contemporary art since the early 1990s through the context of print and with specific reference to examples from EASTinternational. Analysis is based on material accessed from the EAST archive and also from an interview with Lynda Morris.

Morris states “The democratic idea of EAST meant that we were always interested in print, multiples and giveaways”.

Print, as it appeared in EASTinternational over its 18 years of operation, is intertwined with the developments of contemporary art generally. And if, in all that occurred under the banner of EAST there is a strong element of the social or the ‘art of encounter’, that would have to be attributed to the precepts that Lynda Morris set down for it at the outset.

NUA International Print Portfolios
Since 2002, BA Fine Art staff and students at Norwich University of the Arts have made limited edition works for the international portfolio project. The purpose of the portfolio has always been to promote the democracy of printed multiples and to provide scope for cultural exchange and pedagogy. Over 250 printed works have been produced since the start of the project and completed portfolios have been donated to educational institutions including Arizona State University, California State University, Academy of Fine Arts Poland, San Francisco Arts Institute, University of Art Berlin, Boston University and Osaka College of Art and Design Kyoto.
