Contemporary Printmaking in Japan: Diversity and Abundance
The state of contemporary Japanese printmaking can be described in two words: diversity and abundance.  This diversity and abundance defies the attempt to easily define the various aspects of contemporary printmaking in Japan. Taking encouragement and inspiration from the events held during the year 2012, the 80th Anniversary of the Japan Print Association, this presentation would like to introduce works and concepts of the younger generation of artists who were featured in the exhibition entitled “Age of Prints”.  The exhibition that was held at the Joshibi University of Art and Design in December 2012 demonstrated the works of 14 young emerging artist/ printmakers whose work experiments with and explores the possibilities of the print medium. Those artists are using printmaking as a point of departure in their creative endeavours mediating the concepts of print and printing matrix within contemporary visual arts. Especially looking at their use of the printing matrix in a way which blurs boundaries between printmaking, installation, painting and modelling. While maintaining the concept of the printing matrix, the so called “han”, the artist develops a dialogue between traditional and new techniques and the crossover between mediums resulting in some hybrid techniques. These techniques demonstrate the continuous expansion and reinvention which is typical of the reality of the print medium. This illustrative talk would like to present how these young artists approach the medium seeking new possibilities through the combination of traditional and new.
