Geologic Intamicy

ILana Halperin

Print Space: 21 July – 22 September

Location: 152 Nethergate, Dundee, DD1 4DY

This new work by Ilana Halperin, produced in collaboration with DCA Print Studio, explores the artist’s longstanding fascination with geological phenomena. Halperin has a highly experimental approach to print based processes: her work includes sculptures formed by immersion in the 80 degree Celsius water of the Blue Lagoon, an active geothermal spring in Iceland and a delicate ‘book’ of laser-etched mica leaves. The series of five woodblock prints are copies of the stencils fabricated for use in the geothermal sculpture process at the Blue Lagoon in Iceland.

Born in 1973 in New York, USA, Ilana Halperin lives and works in Glasgow. She received her Master of Fine Arts from Glasgow School of Art, Scotland and her Bachelor of Arts from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. Recent solo exhibitions include in Berlin, Steine at the Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum der Charité, and Hand Held Lava at Schering Stiftung. Group exhibitions include Volcano at Compton Verney in Warwickshire, England; Estratos, PAC Murcia, Spain; Polar Dispatches, Portland Museum of Art, Maine. She received numerous awards, including Creative Scotland Artist Award, British Council Darwin Now Award and Alchemy Fellowship at the Manchester Museum. Halperin is first Artist Fellow at the National Museum of Scotland, with a solo exhibition at the museum in the Edinburgh Art Festival, summer 2013.
