Biography

Jacky Blake                 Barbara Salvadori
We have both been collaborating together for a while, discovering new ways of working within sustainable printmaking. Barbara has been a printmaking technician for 5 years, as well as a book artist and designer. She trained in Florence, Italy as an architect before retraining as a book artist. Jack has been a lecturer and graphic designer for 25 years and lately has incorporated the process of printmaking into her work. We are both champions of sustainability inside & outside of our workplaces and have developed a sustainable art & design cycle tour company, providing workshops in printmaking and general tours to a variety of people and companies.

Outside Inside Sustainable Printmaking
The talk will showcase a sustainable printmaking collaborative project ‘outside inside, which was conducted in the outdoor environment by students and staff from the University of the Arts, London.

The use of sustainable materials (non toxic printing) and an immersion into the environment will illustrate how the participants reacted and worked within these transitional spaces. The talk will also explore how an awareness of material use, climatic implications and personal responses away from a comfortable and predictable studio setting have impacted and influenced intrinsic work.

The team of 14 printmakers (12 students and 2 staff members) had been selected from a variety of courses and levels to create a shared learning community from foundation to masters’ students. The intention of a mixed group was to enable a collaboration of skills, experiences and later to form a cross platform of environmentally aware printmakers.

The mixed group enabled students to learn from each other and break down any perceived levels of learning from forced silos. The fluid nature of play, discover through ‘green’ materials and environmental changes enabled the collaborative group to reflect upon their and their peers learning via experimentation.

The projects key focuses are on how the physical external environment away from the ‘normal’ studio can affect our making and critical decision-making.  We will highlight 3 different print process workshops within 3 different outdoor uncontrolled environments; solar plates on the foreshore-beach, relief plates in the field-park, screenprinting in the cityscape. This will be done by showcasing and discussing the process, student responses and workshops via a short film clip produced during the project and featuring work produced.
