Candid: Documentary film from the National Gallery of Australia’s Kenneth Tyler Printmaking Collection
American master-printer Kenneth Tyler is a leading figure in post-war printmaking. The Kenneth Tyler Printmaking Collection at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) comprises over 7000 editioned prints, proofs, drawings, paper-works, multiples and illustrated books. Complementing this important collection are large holdings of rare candid photography, film and audio material that document the unique working environment of Tyler’s workshops. This valuable collection of documentary material will form the basis of an exhibition at the NGA in 2014. Focussing on the work of a diverse group of artists including Terence La Noue, Steven Sorman, David Hockney, and John Newman the exhibition will present artworks in the context of their making. This paper is the product of research conducted in preparation for the exhibition. Using previously unpublished audio material from the film and sound collection the paper addresses collaboration and the relationship between artist and printmaker, and the possibilities of print as a medium through the work of Steven Sorman and Terence La Noue.
