Adventures in Printmaking – from the Wild West to the Far East
One of the delights of being a printmaker is the potential for collaborations that transcend cultural boundaries. My proposed talk is about the extremes of printmaking – from working with Mayans in a culture that has no history of printmaking; to taking part in the Hong Kong Graphic Fiesta: China being the culture that invented printmaking.

In 2002, 2006 and 2007, I introduced and taught printmaking at La Academia de Arte Maya in the wild Highlands of Guatemala.
In 2001 I assisted in the making of a film about Mayan culture, in collaboration with the Mayan artists who run La Academia. I returned in order to run printmaking workshops in relief, monoprint and silkscreen. The artists continue to make powerful and unusual prints that reflect their unique culture.

In 2011 I exhibited in the International University Students’ Exchange Exhibition in Hong Kong, which was part of the annual Hong Kong Graphic Fiesta. I was also invited to be a guest speaker, and to demonstrate plate lithography. I gained fascinating insights into printmaking in a foreign culture while working with Chinese printmakers.

Crossing the Line – A Journey from Illustrator to Printmaker
This portfolio follows my journey from illustration to printmaking. Illustration is a job that involves working for clients, always to a brief, and usually to a tight deadline. Creativity is required, but strictly within boundaries.
After years of professional illustration practice, I yearned for more freedom of expression. From 2007 – 2010 I did an MA at Aberystwyth School of Art, specializing in lithography and animation.
As well as gaining technical competence, I had to find subject matter…something an illustrator does not have to worry about. I found the answer was to explore my own experiences to find images that resonate.
