Biography

Engraving is the technique of carving directly into metal (or a hard surface) with a graver/burin for the purpose of object ornamentation or intaglio printing. Hand engraving involves the use of a slender steel or carbide blade affixed to wood (or plastic) handle that fits in to the palm of the users hand. The blade can be sharpened in a variety of geometries that afford the user a wide range of marks. Mark width and tapering is contingent upon the users ability to apply various pressures. Holding the graver at a proper angle and maintaining the tool’s sharpness are both essential to the success of the cutting. This demonstration will also discuss transfer techniques and plate preparation. There will also be old gravers and new gravers on hand for comparison.
