Beyond the Visual
The idea of interpreting 2D work as sound has been something that Julie Barratt has been interested in for some time and collaborating with Australian sound-artist Jay-Dea Lopez has given her the opportunity to pursue this desire. Barratt’s artist book ‘The Mourning After’ is a mixed media work in which the hand-stitched pages reveal a narrative relating to the artist’s father’s death.

Lopez’s sound composition uses modified recordings of stainless steel pins slowly dropping onto a plate in Barratt’s studio. These pins were then inserted into the pages of ‘The Mourning After’. The sound has a meditative quality, which inherently reflects the process of making the work that involved the insertion of over 3000 pins. This process took countless weeks and allowed the artist time to sit with and process her grief.
