Biography

Katie graduated from the University of the West of England in 2009 after completing her undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Textile Design. She then went on to study for an MPhil in Gas Sensor Fabrication for medical diagnostic applications, which she successfully completed in May 2013. Katie started work as a Research Assistant at the Centre for Fine Print Research in 2011 on a 3D printed ceramics project. This insight to contemporary print techniques lead to her current PhD post entitled “Can Egyptian Paste Techniques (Faience) be used for 3D printed, Solid Free-form Fabrication of Ceramics?”

Poster Presentation

Can contemporary materials and modern day techniques be used to create 3D-printed ceramics inspired by ancient Egyptian faience?
The Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR) at the University of the West of England has recently been awarded funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council for a three year research project entitled “Can Egyptian Paste Techniques (Faience) be used for 3D printed, Solid Free-form Fabrication of Ceramics?” The research aims to create a set of self-glazing ceramic materials based on ancient Egyptian Faience techniques, which will enable ceramic artists, designers and craftspeople to 3D print single fired, glazed ceramic objects; something that is not possible with current technology.
