Illustrated Talk

Waterless Lithography :– from Dundee to Canada , Bavaria , and Beyond : or : How I met a family I didn’t know I had.
Nik Semenoff, employed as the artist in residence at Saskatchewan University, was concerned with finding a low toxic , inexpensive alternative to traditional lithography , and published his research online. This was where I first learned about the process and was supported by the Fine Art Faculty at Dundee University to attend Semenoffs ‘New Directions In Printmaking ‘ workshop 2004, in Canada.

On returning to Dundee I set up the necessary equipment and materials and in the years since have taught many students this technique. It is a valuable process to have in the workshops, both introducing students to printmaking, creating autographic and photographic imagery, and being used to sophisticated ends by advanced students.

As well as working from the aluminium plate, we have experimented with using plywood, creating more organic results, and have started working with Litho Stones, using water based materials.

As a result of this work, I have been invited to teach and demonstrate at various places including North Glasgow College ,and the Oberpfalzer Kunstlerhaus ,Bavaria , and  given a talk and demonstration at the Lithotage Symposium 2012 in Munich Germany.

This Illustrated Talk is not intended as a technical presentation of the process of waterless lithography, but as a reflection on practice, collaboration , and the people of art and print that engaging with waterless lithography has afforded me.

Workshop Demonstration

Waterless Lithography and Stone Lithography @ DOJCA Printmaking Workshops.
Waterless Lithography is a process which allows for a wide variety of approaches: from small to large scale possibilities, through autographic and photographic means, to applying the technique to different materials. It is easy to teach. Much of the materials used are non toxic, the basic process itself can be delivered over the course of a morning, and students can be pulling prints from mid day.

The hour long demonstration will include how the process is done, from prepping to printing, but will also be a chance to see various uses of lithography in the workshops, and meet some recent Graduates who will have examples of their work.
