Festival Exhibitions

A wide and exciting range of exhibitions, events and performances have been co-ordinated to celebrate the Impact 8 conference and mark the inaugural Print Festival Scotland. These venues range from internationally recognised contemporary arts galleries to local artist run initiatives in alternative public spaces. Many will trailer the conference (running for extended periods prior and post conference period) but venues will schedule conference previews and special events to welcome Impact 8 delegates. These will be integrated into the conference programme. Venues include:

     There Will Be New Rules Next Week

Tracing the influence of Sister Corita Kent’s teaching through the years down to important and emerging artists in the UK today. To include examples of protest art and graphics, and aiming to show the importance of her work as an educator and artist.

Impact8 2013 will co-incide with a significant print exhibition at The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum, organised by the Victoria rt Mand Albeuseum, London as part of the pre-opening programme for the V&A at Dundee.

     Proof:

Art + Forensics = A Groundbreaking Residency

‘Proof’ is an exhibition inspired by my residency in Abertay’s forensics lab. Each piece of work will be produced using materials commonly used in forensics. The exhibition aims to reveal the invisible, whether it be minute detail too small for the human eye to see or prints left from the surface of skin.

Freedom Versions and Creative Stirling

     1NE4OURZERO

The 40 most considered, inspired or powerful statements will be hand screen-printed to make a limited edition series, which will be exhibited in the Old Town Jail, Stirling from the 2nd Aug – 14th Sept 2013. The installation will include a working print studio run by artists and designers employing traditional print methods and the content for the exhibition will grow and evolve over the six week installation.

Roseangle Gallery

    DCA Print Studio Registered Artists Exhibition

The Dundee Contemporary Arts Print Studio has been the home of Dundee’s public access print facility for over thirteen years. With an active studio registration of two hundred artists, the space continues to provide individuals from all walks of life the opportunity to explore mark making, from the simplest monotype print to the latest in CNC technology. From August 24th to September 1st, fifty artists will be participating in this diverse exhibition of Scottish printmaking.

Tin Roof Arts Collective

           
      Tin Roof Social Club

Tin Roof Social Club is a project by Dundee-based artists Fraser MacDonald and Catrin Jeans. The club is based on the design and function of traditional Scottish social clubs, and visitors will be hosted with tea & coffee, newspapers, toasties and snacks in an installation created to function as a social space.

Bird of Passage

      Bird of Passage

A temporary laboratory will be erected at the Walled Garden, Glasgow where artists Ross
Hamilton Frew, Sarah Laing and Gayle Meikle will present a collaborative research project
entitled Bird of Passage. The lab will focus in applications of off-the-grid printing acting as a
think-tank for future thought.

Exploring the relationship between economy and ecology, this exhibition casts light on the tangle of chains that constitute our relational world. Moving from print as a means of communication to the imprint of human values, Print Shift explores related themes of food sovereignty, community empowerment, and economic exchange.

     40/40: forty years, forty artists

In celebration of 40 years of printmaking excellence, Glasgow Print Studio presents 40/40 an exhibition of 40 newly commissioned prints from some of Scotland’s finest artists.

40/40 features specially commissioned, new prints from 40 friends and members of Glasgow Print Studio. Each print has been produced in an edition of 40 and offer diversity in technique, style and value

The Book & Paper Open Studio

    The Book & Paper Open Studio

The Book & Paper Studio is a small conservation practice based in the heart of Dundee, run by Emma Fraser and during the Print Festival the studio will be open for visitors. The Studio has been running for 18 months and has worked on everything from the first edition of the local ‘Courier’ Newspaper to photographic albums charting the construction of The RRS Discovery, and a few original Burns‘ manuscripts along the way.

WASPS, Meadow Mill Studios

    AnSo Live Screen Printing Event and Exhibition

30th August 2013, Meadow Mill Projects will come to life with the AnSo Live Screen Printing Event. A bare walled exhibition space, DJ, bar, and screen printing tables. Over the course of the evening there will be live screen printing, and finished work will be immediately hung, creating an exhibition.

      Knife Edge Press: The Complete Works (so far)

Showcasing the critically celebrated artists’ books produced to date by Knife Edge Press, the creative partnership of writer Mel Gooding and artist Bruce McLean. Alongside the artists’ books the exhibition will also present prints, posters, photographic documentation and other ephemera generated during their twenty-eight years of creative exchange and collaboration.

     Cooper Summer Residency 2013 -

Invisible Residency

Adding marginalia to the exhibition Knife Edge Press: The Complete Works (so far), writer Mel Gooding and artist Bruce McLean will undertake an Invisible Residency. The invisible residency will take the place of this year’s Annual Cooper Summer Residency to inscribe a daily visual and textual dialogue into the Cooper Gallery creating an extended dialogue with the exhibition.

Highlights from the University of Dundee

Print Collection

This exhibition features a wealth of material from the University’s extensive print collections. Scottish artists’ printmaking is the principal focus, with work by significant figures such as Elizabeth Blackadder, Eduardo Paolozzi, Ian Hamilton Finlay, John Bellany and Toby Paterson, as well as former students and staff of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

      The D’Arcy Thompson Print Folio

In 2012, as part of a major project to build a collection of art inspired by Dundee’s pioneer of life sciences, D’Arcy Thompson, a folio of artists’ prints was commissioned from leading artists on the staff of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, all of them drawing on themes from D’Arcy’s ideas and collections and exhibited here for the first time.

This exhibition, created in association with DC Thomson & Co Ltd, charts the history of Dundee’s most famous printing company, looking at their many famous publications produced over the years – newspapers, magazines and comics – and how these have been led and influenced by changes in print technology.

      Ekiffo Ekyokwetariramu -  Room to Roam

A foot print exploration triggered by Alexander McKay an Aberdeenshire missionary who went to Uganda with a printing press to disseminate his views of civilization and technology. The double slow marathon 6 day trek with a small ex-libris press will bring together the human pace with discussions on ecology, borders, globalisation and wanderlust.

Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA)

      Geologic Intimacy

This new work by Ilana Halperin, produced in collaboration with DCA Print Studio, explores the artist’s longstanding fascination with geological phenomena. Halperin has a highly experimental approach to print based processes: her work includes sculptures formed by immersion in the 80 degree Celsius water of the Blue Lagoon, an active geothermal spring in Iceland and a delicate ‘book’ of laser-etched mica leaves.

 Peacock Visual Arts

      Circa

CIRCA is a series of eight silkscreen printed works by internationally renowned British artist Adam Bridgland, editioned in the print studio at Peacock Visual Arts in Aberdeen.  Installed across the city of Dundee during late August 2013 in spaces egalitarian in nature, including bus and train stations, cinema foyers, libraries, shopping centres and public houses, the project embraces the theme of exploration.

    Rackspac3

Situated within the DCA Print Studio, Rackspac3 is a site specific exhibition that will rotate over three days, hosting works by three differnt artists. Used traditionally to store drying relief prints, this space will be transformed into a space that will provide a platform for artists mixing traditional and new print mediums, creating a visual narrative.

‘Don’t Look Back’

Fiona Banner’s Don’t Look Back constitutes three attempts to describe Penne- baker’s documentary in its entirety. Although the texts describe the same film they are each slightly different, three different moments.The presence of these descriptions undermines this notion of an objective entirety, the texts are subject to the laws of memory – no two performances are the same. There is no definitive description, no definitive memory.

‘Sunshine over the Sea, Shadows of the Forest:Recent Woodblock Prints’

After making woodblock prints for over 40 years, Teruo Isomi has retired as President of Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Art and Music. He now wishes to ‘Recognise the meaning of being a Printmaker once again’.

This Exhibition focusses particularly on his large scale black and white woodcuts and follows on from his acclaimed exhibition last year at the Pier Arts Centre in the Orkney Isles.
